'Shatter Me' Author Tahereh Mafi Talks 'X-Men' Comparisons

Image
Our fight against future foes continues this week as we, along with our friends at TheFABlife and NextMovie , celebrate all things dystopian! With all of our, um, gentle prodding over the past few months, we can only hope you've made time to dive into one of our favorite dystopian reads of the year, Tahereh Mafi's intriguing "Shatter Me." The novel follows teen Juliette, who's been locked in solitary confinement for nearly a year thanks to her curse gift: her touch is lethal power. Tahereh recently chatted with TheFABlife about her inspiration for the novel and her take on the dystopian trend, and we've got a bit of bonus material from the interview. Now, if you've read "Shatter Me," you may have noticed a few similarities between its protagonist and a certain "X-Men" character played by Anna Paquin. But according to Tahereh, she'd never heard of the superhero until her novel was completed. "I didn't even know who Rogue ...

Joan of Arc, Saturday, November 26

Brad Newsome November 25, 2011 - 11:00PM A drawing of Joan of Arc. History, 6.30pm A well-made and absorbing documentary that tells the story of the 15th-century farm girl who thought she had a divine mission to liberate France from the English and who became a military heroine before being burned to death for heresy. Anna Paquin provides the voice of Joan but it's hard not to think of Yvette from 'Allo 'Allo .

The worm's turning again in favour of Black Caps

PHIL GIFFORD OPINION: Time to dream again. The Aussies used to think so little of us as cricketers they sent B teams to play ersatz tests matches. But now, in a turn of events that may not be so much a case of a worm turning, but a worm turning, growing teeth, and ripping anything in its way to shreds, the Black Caps look to have a shot at beating Australia in a test match. Well, OK, maybe just turning. The last time the Black Caps beat the boys in the baggy greens, in 1993, Jim Bolger was prime minister, an 11-year-old boy, Dan Carter, was in Year 7 at Ellesmere College, and a hot New Zealand movie The Piano featured another 11-year-old, Anna Paquin. Ever since, when New Zealand play Australia in tests, it's been largely a sad, losing story. But maybe the stars have finally aligned in such a way that when the first ball is bowled at the Gabba on Thursday the men in the black helmets can realistically see themselves finishing first. First reason to be modestly confident? Those Au...

Lights, camera, romance!

With the release of Dream House this week the film that sparked the romance between its stars Rachel Weisz and Daniel Craig we decided to look back at other celebrity couples that fell in love on set. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart While they've never "officially" confirmed their romance, it's pretty much taken for granted that Twilight Saga co-stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are in a relationship. Rumours started swirling about their romance back during their Twilight days in 2008 and as the years have gone by, they've done little to dissuade the rumours. On the Breaking Dawn press tour they were pictured repeatedly looking loved-up on the red carpet. Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied Natalie Portman met choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied on the set of ballet thriller Black Swan in 2009. Natalie, who won an Academy Award for her performance on the film, announced her engagement to Benjamin during the in 2010/2011 awards seas...

Joe Manganiello Sookie Stackhouse, played by actress Anna Paquin (left) Joe Manganiello Alcide Herveaux, the werewolf in True Blood Twenty-five years ago, a little boy was so obsessed with wolves that he got down on his knees and prayed that he could turn into a werewolf. Well, that didnt happen. Now that Joe Manganiello is grown up, he finally gets his wish. Well almost. The film and theatre actor plays werewolf Alcide Herveaux in the award winning HBO Original Series, True Blood. For the uninitiated, the series is based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, detailing the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional, small town in the state of Louisiana. The series revolves around the adventures of a telepathic waitress, Sookie Stackhouse, played by actress Anna Paquin. Looking back, Manganiello, 34, marvels at how things have turned out perfectly for him, even though it has taken more than two decades. Wolves have been my favouri! t...

This werewolf's no regular Joe

Image
By Victoria Barker my paper Wednesday, Nov 23, 2011 WHEN it comes to showing skin, American actor Joe Manganiello - who plays werewolf Alcide Herveaux on HBO vampire drama True Blood - is now an expert. That's considering the raunchy sex scenes and almost-full-blown nudity required for his performance on True Blood, which also stars Anna Paquin. The gruff-voiced 34-year-old - who was named one of People Magazine's sexiest men alive last year and who works out twice a day, six days a week, to maintain his buff physique - also once went full-frontal for a stage performance in college, he said. But he admitted that "running around naked in broad daylight" for scenes in True Blood took some getting used to. On the line with Asian media from Hong Kong, where he was on a promotional junket for the show, Manganiello revealed candidly that "I've gotten more comfortable with it, but I'm not comfortable knowing my parents are watching (such scenes)", he added ...

Joe Manganiello: True Blood's big loved wolf

Image
PHILSTAR: Nathalie Tomada Whos afraid of the wolf? It will be hard to cower in fear if the werewolf happens to be Alcide Herveaux of True Blood. He might be eternally wrestling with the monster in him, but Alcide has managed to endear himself to the hardcore fans of the hit HBO urban fantasy series since his introduction in season three, many thanks to the actor fleshing out the character, Joe Manganiello. For the uninitiated, the crux of the story of True Blood, created and produced by Alan Ball, is the co-existence of vampires and humans in Bon Temps, a fictional, small town in Louisiana. Theres Sookie Stackhouse (played by actress Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress who falls in love with vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and who also shares some romantic tension with fanged hunk Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard). The weres, short for werewolves, came into the picture in season three, with Alcide, a reclusive werewolf who performs favors for Eric, making an impact as another lo...

'True Blood' hunk Joe Manganiello reveals passing up on 'Superman'

HONG KONG Hollywood hunk Joe Manganiello chose to stay with HBOs True Blood as werewolf Alcide Herveaux over the chance to star in the Superman reboot Man of Steel, which Henry Cavill eventually clinched. Alcide the lone werewolf in the love quadrangle involving human/fairy Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and vampires Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) has had Joe anchored to the show for several solid seasons, including the ongoing one (season 4, shown Thursdays in Manila, 10 p.m.). True Blood has become a TV phenomenon for fans of the vampire genre. Based on the The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris, the Alan Ball-created True Blood grounds its plot in a world where humans co-exist with vampires. The show is HBOs bet in the Hollywood vampire trend. The 35-year-old Joe told Bulletin Entertainment in a recent interview at the Mandarin Oriental that when he was asked to screen test for Superman, he had already inked a si...

Has True Blood's season 5 Big Bad been revealed?

True Blood has cast another brand new female vampire for the series' upcoming fifth season who may just be the next ''Big Bad.'' And from the looks of it, the former King of Mississipi, Russell Edgington (Denis O'Hare), could face stiff competition in the crazy vamp department next year. Mike Ausiello from TV Line reports that Italian actress Valentina Cervi ( Artemisia , Zen ) has been cast as Salome, a new series regular who is described as: ''an ancient vampire who is a world class seductress and fiercely intelligent. She also has quite a lot of madness in her. She is the most powerful person in every way yet capable of hiding this power when it serves her purposes.'' Just like Eric Northman's (Alexander Skarsgard) newly cast vampire sister Nora ( Robin Hood 's Lucy Griffiths), Salome is a new character created by show creator Alan Ball and co. for the hit HBO series, and doesn't exist in author Charlaine Harris' Sookie Sta...

They are violent but they love to make love. No limits, well, sort of. “I think that part of the joy of the show is pushing those limits,“ series creator Alan Ball told the set of foreign journalists present during the show’s Los Angeles junket in early August. “In terms of body parts...

Drinking in the fame

IT IS one of the hottest shows on television and at the end of season three, the vampire king Russell (Denis O’Hare) was buried alive in a pit of concrete and Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) has suddenly vanished in a flash of light. With the fourth season of True Blood premiering on HBO tomorrow, many will be curious to see how the denizens of Bon Temps in Louisiana – made up of vampires, humans, shape-shifters, werewolves, witches and other strange critters – have moved on. True Blood essentially follows the romance between waitress Sookie, who has the ability to read people’s minds, and 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer). Created by Alan Ball (the Emmy-winning creator of Six Feet Under ), this series is based on the best-selling The Southern Vampire Mysteries (also known as The Sookie Stackhouse Novels ) by Charlaine Harris.
