(Getty Images North America) more pics Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer at the Elton John AIDS Foundation soiree. (Getty Images) Sure, sure, the Oscars are meant for honoring the greatest achievements of the movie industry, but every fashionista knows it's all about the dresses. Who can forget Gwyneth Paltrow's pink ball gown or Halle Berry's sheer Elie Saab masterpiece? For a 84th Academy Awards viewing party, Anna Paquin stole the spotlight in her Emilio Pucci dress. At the Elton John viewing party, Anna turned on the glamor in a black and gold cocktail dress. As the Sookie Stackhouse on the hit HBO series True Blood , Anna is usually seen in uber-feminine frocks fit for vampire fighting (and loving). Her fitted black dress with gold celestial detailing was just the right pick to show ...

Nominated for Nothing: Are you there, Oscar? Its me, Margaret

Image Credit: Myles Aronowitz Every year, brilliant movies are utterly ignored by the Oscars. The Searchers, Groundhog Day, Persona, Breathless, Hoop Dreams, King Kong, Caddyshack the Academy has a long history of overlooking comedies, action movies, horror flicks, artsy foreign films, and documentaries that arent about World War II. This year, well be taking a closer look at films that were too small, too weird, or perhaps simply too awesome for the Academy Awards. These are the Non-Nominees. The Film: Margaret , Kenneth Lonergans long-delayed opus about an Upper West Side high-schooler named Lisa (Anna Paquin, never better) who inadvertently causes a terrible accident that takes the life of an innocent pedestrian (Allison Janney), after she flirts with a bus driver. The next two hours show the complex evolution of her guilt as she launches legal proceedings against the driver, while not fully acknowledging her own role in the tragedy. Lonergan, who immediately established himself a...

Oscar voters: Meet the academy's youngest members

Image
For a preteen, membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences brings some particularly grown-up perks. The biggest thrill for Anna Paquin, who joined at age 11, wasnt being able to vote on the best picture of the year it was that her membership allowed her to see R-rated movies before she was 17. I remember thinking that was the pretty much the coolest thing that could happen to me, recalled Paquin, now 29. My parents were pretty finicky with ratings, and occasionally Id get away with watching stuff that was a little older than they preferred. Plus, I was living in New Zealand, and once a year Id get sent all of these movies that werent coming out for months where I lived. In 1994, Paquin took home the supporting actress Oscar for her role in The Piano as the daughter of a mute pianist. At 11, she became the second-youngest performer behind Tatum ONeal to ever score one of the coveted awards. And months later, she became one of the youngest members of the academy. The O...

Anna Paquin: I like being funny

Anna Paquin loves her messed-up mixed with funny True Blood lines. The star plays Sookie Stackhouse in the critically acclaimed HBO TV series. Anna delivers some punchy lines in the show, and enjoys the scriptwriters offerings. I love my messed-up mixed with my funny, as much as the next gal. In real life, one of the things I always find is that, if you can laugh through a situation, even if its incredibly sad or really hard, its the way through, and our show uses that in a really great way, she revealed in an interview with SciFi Now magazine. Also its just really fun for someone to write you in a way that makes you sound incredibly funny. Stephen Moyer Annas husband and on-screen love interest plays vampire Bill Compton. The actors lines are far less exciting. My character isnt one of the ones who gets many of those lines because hes more melancholic and introverted. But, I was very pleased in Episode 5, where Pam [Ravenscroft, a fictional vampire] comes on with a huge hat because ...

Moyer: I wasn't looking for a wife

Stephen Moyer has admitted he wasn't in the market for a bride when he met wife Anna Paquin. The Essex-born actor met Oscar-winner Anna on the set of their vampire show True Blood - and they went on to tie the knot in Malibu in 2010 - but he said he wasn't thinking about marriage at the time. "I certainly wasn't looking for a wife when I started," laughed the actor, who has two children from previous relationships. "Neither of us were looking. And perhaps that's the point - when you're looking in the wife shop, you can never find one. And then one comes along when you're least expecting it." Stephen also revealed the couple missed working together so much in the last series when the relationship between his vampire Bill Compton and Anna's telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse came to an end. The 42-year-old said: "Anna and I love working together, it's all we've ever known, so we kind of miss it, but I think they realised hal...

Anna Paquin: True Blood writers are outlandish

Anna Paquin is careful of the outlandish things she says around the True Blood writers as they sometimes end up in the show. The actress is famed for her role as Sookie Stackhouse in the HBO series. True Blood follows the co-existence of vampires and humans in a fictional town in Louisiana. Because of the fantasy content, Anna has to bite her tongue with discussing far-fetched ideas around the production team, as they sometimes end up working them into the script. Sometimes I pitch things that are a joke. There was a scene in episode nine [of season four] with me Steve [Moyer] and Alex [Skarsgrd] that I pitched, which I cant you about, but was sort of a joke, but not really, she explained in an interview with SciFi Now. Sometimes I wonder if I say things that are really outlandish and because of the nature of our show, they actually end up in the show. Annas character Sookie has a complicated relationship with vampire Bill. The star likes to get her teeth stuck into the intricate roman...
